The best gift is to teach them languages. Since we live close to the tourist area, this will provide them an opportunity to work and make a decent living."
Location:
Muñoz, Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic. Number of inhabitants, 14,000 with lots of children Languages spoken by our staff: English, French, German, Spanish, Creole. Languages spoken in the community: Spanish and Creole (Haitian)
We have a project to help the impoverished community of Muñoz.
SunCampDR is located within this community, so if we improve the life of these people, we improve our own neighborhood. We need volunteers of all ages and there are no specific qualifications required.
You will be greatly appreciated here among the Dominican and Haitian communities. Your schedule is flexible and there are many different ways to help. Teaching languages is the most convenient service we can bring to these people. There is no limit to the progress that we can achieve...
William is a young pensioner who came on a vacation volunteer project at SuncampDR in December 2010. William is a builder and an active man. He went back to Canada and his heart remains here because he is making some funding actions to come back and help better the community. While in Puerto Plata, William participated in some activities at the Community Center and his favorite pastime was walking in the Munoz village. Here is how William described the volunteer vacation in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic:
The cultural shock, my sister experienced a shock in the Batey …
Now we realize that the experience of volunteering in such a poor neighborhood can be of a huge emotion, sometimes extremely difficult to deal with… My sister’s heart beat faster, her face was full of expression and she could not find the words to express what she felt in the middle of the Batey and children and sick people… She said, I will not be able to come back here...
Let me introduce you to a very dedicated volunteer, Bernard Cail, from France who has come many times during the past years to SunCampDR and who also has invited many people to vacation in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic and he invites them to participate in all the volunteer actions in the local community of Munoz Puerto Plata.
These vacationers have also started their own little volunteer projects. Bernard is a young pensioner who wants more than a vacation under the tropics! He is not a simple tourist; he is part of our local community! In his heart, the Dominican Republic has a special mark.
Johnny on a mission work, giving rice & beans at the church in the Batey
Johnny and his wife Annett have been coming to SunCampDR and rented and economical apartment for 6 months. We cannot say that they are only on vacation because they really do some volunteer work. They have been coming and going out of the Dominican Republic for a period over six months with always a humanitarian contribution in mind.
Their main goal and focus is giving food. They have decided to practice their volunteer donation in Puerto Plata, in Munoz Batey which is located right across the tourist complex of Playa Dorada at only 25 minute drive from Puerto Plata airport. They feed hundreds of families in the typical village. They are very punctual and dedicated in giving rice and beans every week.
Thanks Suzy for a beautiful time with the children at the community center.
The main theme was ANIMALS... The children enjoyed drawing animals and also made of clay. They love their teacher Suzy! Thanks to Yvon who donated the material.
At the same time, we had Bernard, Dorothy, and another Bernard and myself giving oatmeal and juice to the people.
Thanks to Linda Walker who provided the funds for this donation and thanks to our actual volunteers who made it possible and made the distribution with so much love! We love the people in the village! XX

Introduction.
The first day I arrived at the one-room school (located in the church), the teacher introduced me to the class and asked if I would talk to the older group of students while she worked with the younger group. I decided to teach them English. Once I began the lesson, the teacher stopped what she was doing to listen in. Soon she decided all the students should be involved and had the younger students turn their desks around to listen to me. Within 15 minutes of arriving in the classroom, I was in charge of the class.
Teach English, French, Yoga... Anything!
